28/07/2009 (Agence Europe) - Jacek Saryusz Wolski (EPP-ED, Poland), who currently heads the Polish delegation within the EPP Group at the European Parliament, suggested on Thursday 23 July that “Memorial”, the association for the defence of human rights, should be put forward as a candidate for the European Parliament's Sakharov Prize. The EP has awarded the prize since 1988 to persons or entities for their action against intolerance, fanaticism and persecution. The Memorial association, of which journalist Natalia Estemiorwa, assassinated on 15 July, was a member, is mainly active in Russia, Ukraine, Latvia, Kazakhstan and Georgia. The association aims to promote the idea of a society of citizens, democracy, respect of human rights and freedom of expression. (A.By./transl.jl)
