EU27 sound warning before Wednesday's elections

Brussels, 28/07/2009 (Agence Europe) - As the early legislative elections to be held in Moldova on Wednesday 29 July draw near (the elections are in fact a re-run of the 5 April ballot for which the process and results were violently contested by the opposition), the EU has warned the authorities of the country that Moldova's European future will also depend on the way the new ballot is organised. “We do not want to see a repetition of what we saw in April and we hope that Moldovan authorities will use this opportunity to demonstrate that they are able to move forward on the overall European agenda that we share”, Carl Bildt commented on Monday evening after the External Relations Council. Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski had informed his colleagues of his visit to Chisinau on 25 July. While there, he had urged Moldovan authorities to sign up to European principles and values in order to be able to enjoy the new opportunities offered by the Eastern Partnership, for which Moldova is one of the six beneficiary countries. “The Moldovan authorities face a choice: either there are free elections and then we [the EU] say we are ready to intensify our relationship with Moldova on the Eastern Partnership, visa facilitation, economic assistance and a free trade zone, or Moldova will isolate itself”, Mr Sikorski told the press on Monday.
