22/07/2009 (Agence Europe) - At the 1000th execution of the death penalty by lethal injection in the United States since capital punishment was reintroduced in 1976, the EU has issued a declaration dated 21 July in which it reiterates its absolute opposition to the death penalty "in all cases and under all circumstances". The EU27 call on the American authorities to institute a moratorium on the death penalty with a view to abolishing the practice completely. (H.B./transl.fl)
