22/07/2009 (Agence Europe) - On 20 July 2009, the European Commission adopted a decision on the view to be defended by the EU at the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO). The measures (that have been submitted to the Council of Ministers for approval) include conservation and management measures for fisheries resources, including quotas for species regulated by the NAFO (where necessary, specific measures for stocks which suffer from overfishing shall be considered in order to avoid any increase of fishing activities); - review of monitoring, control and surveillance measures in the NAFO Regulatory Area in order to enhance the efficiency of control measures and to strengthen compliance with NAFO measures; reinforcement of action against IUU fishing activities; and protective measures for vulnerable marine ecosystems in the NAFO Regulatory Area in line with UNGA Resolutions.
