Fortunately, even in European matters, money is not everything. Conviction and what is in people's best interest can win the day. I am referring to the case of Irish multi-millionaire Declan Ganley (see ours newsletter No. 9918). He thought he was the big winner in the referendum where his country said “No” to the Lisbon Treaty, and he was not entirely wrong, because he had amply funded a campaign of incredible lies on what was in the Treaty, convincing people that it would end Ireland's neutrality, that it would impose divorce and abortion and would have removed Ireland's sovereignty in fiscal matters. With the government not doing enough to counter these lies, too concerned that it would appear to be trying to influence the vote, we all know what happened. Then the multi-millionaire began to dream his dreams of greatness: founding and generously funding a Eurosceptic movement falsely named Libertas, with 532 candidates standing in the European elections in 14 member states. Ganley even put a figure to his ambitions: 106 MEPs!
