Brussels, 05/06/2009 (Agence Europe) - EU foreign ministers will hold an exchange of views with Serge Brammertz of Belgium, who is prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), on the occasion of the of the upcoming External Relations Council in Luxembourg on 15 June. Ministers will, among other things, ask Mr Brammertz whether Serbia is now fully cooperating with the ICTY and whether the Serbian authorities are doing everything necessary to locate and arrest the last people sought for war crimes. The Netherlands is blocking ratification of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) that the EU and Serbia signed in 2008 as well as the entry into force of the interim SAA. The Dutch government will not consider Belgrade has met the criteria for “full cooperation” with the ICTY until it has allowed the arrest of Radko Mladic, the Serbian general accused of being responsible for the Srebrenica massacre in 1995. Reporting to the UN Security Council in New York on Thursday 4 June, Mr Brammertz said Serbia has stepped up cooperation with the court, but did not speak of “full cooperation”. He also said he hoped the Serb authorities would continue along this road during the trials of high-ranking defendants either underway or to come. (H.B./transl.jl)
