Solana hopes his visit with Joe Biden will act as “electroshock”

Brussels, 20/05/2009 (Agence Europe) - EU High Representative for the CFSP Javier Solana hopes that the message of unity and reconciliation that he launched with US Vice-President Joe Biden during their joint visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina on Tuesday 19 May will have the effect of an “electroshock” on Bosnian leaders, leading them to work together to bring their country closer to Europe. Speaking to press in Sarajevo on Wednesday 20 May, Solana said he would describe the previous day's visit to the Bosnian capital “as a sort of electroshock”. “We sent a very clear message (to the leaders of the three ethnic communities) on how to move the country forward towards the European Union. I believe that together with the leaders of the country … we will be able to make progress and break the deadlock” caused by the disagreements over the future of the country among Croats, Bosnian Muslims and Serbs, he said. Addressing the Bosnian parliament, Biden denounced the nationalistic rhetoric used by leaders and called on them to opt for closer integration with the EU and NATO. (H.B./transl.rt)
