Swedish aid to Scania approved

Brussels, 15/05/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 14 May, the European Commission has authorised a Swedish grant of €11 million (SEK 123.5 million) for a staff training programme at Scania's plants at Södertälje, Oskarshamm and Luleå, all in Sweden. The Commission found that the training programme was aimed at increasing the general knowledge and skills of the workforce and should result in improving the workers' employability in the heavy vehicles industry and associated sectors. The aid will lead to additional training that would not have been carried out without the aid. The Commission concluded, therefore, that the measure was compatible with Article 87.3.c of the EC Treaty, which allows aid to develop certain economic activities. Scania AB is the parent company of the Scania group, which is a leading manufacturer of heavy trucks and buses. The group employs around 13,000 people in Sweden. (L.C./transl.rt)
