Solana condemns attacks on transitional government

Brussels, 13/05/2009 (Agence Europe) - With the Transitional Government of Somalia facing new attacks, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana reiterated his solidarity with and support for the legitimate government. “I strongly condemn the recent attacks in Mogadishu by groups targeting the legitimate Transitional Federal Government of Somalia. I deplore the fact that many civilians have fallen victim to this violence and I am shocked to see Somalis killed by fellow Somalis,” Solana said in a press release, calling on the Somali people “to unite behind the Djibouti peace process”. The transitional federal government of Somalia, he said, had courageously committed itself to leading a broad-based political process, adding: “The door has remained open to all constructive forces in Somalia to join a process that is backed by the entire international community”.
