Brussels, 07/05/2009 (Agence Europe) - The outgoing Czech prime minister, Alexandr Vondra, (who will no longer be a member of the new government of Jan Fischer, which takes office on 9 May) said that there is no doubt that President Vaclav Klaus will sign the Czech ratification law for the Lisbon Treaty. In a press release Mr Vondra declared that “nothing impedes the formal conclusion of the ratification process of the Lisbon Treaty in the Czech Republic”. Vondra also affirmed that by voting for the new treaty, Czech parliamentarians had clearly demonstrated that “the Czech Republic wishes to continue to play a central role in the European integration process within the EU”. A few hours after the vote at the Senate on Wednesday, Mr Klaus indicated that the signing of the ratification law was not on the agenda and he would, in any event, be awaiting the verdict of the Constitutional Court on a possible new complaint received from certain Eurosceptic ODS MPs (close to Mr Klaus). The possibility of further court procedures appear to be real (EUROPE 9896). The Czech president had previously said that he would also wait for Ireland's ratification before signing. (H.B./transl.rh)
