06/05/2009 (Agence Europe) - By adopting by 598 votes for and 14 abstentions, the report by Spanish Socialist Miguel Angel Martinez, the European Parliament on Tuesday 5 May, adopted the draft recommendation of the European Ombudsman on discriminatory practices at the Commission in its employment of free-lance interpreters. Parliament is calling on the Commission to revise its policy of getting rid of the ban on the recruitment of auxiliary conference interpreters aged over 65. This recommendation follows the complaint of an interpreter employed for 35 years by the European institutions and who suddenly ceased getting offers of work from the two institutions after reaching 65. Parliament had already adapted its own rules following a first recommendation sent it by the Ombudsman. (O.J./trans/rh)
