Brussels, 23/04/2009 (Agence Europe) - During his visit to Moldova on 23 April, the Czech prime minister who has just resigned, Mirek Topolánek, but who currently presides over the European Council, called for the country to keep a “European orientation” and improve relations with neighbouring Romania. “We have followed and continue to follow the situation in Moldova. For the EU, what is happening in your country does not leave us indifferent. We believe Moldova's European lean towards Europe is important”, he said during a press meeting with the Moldovan president, Vladimir Voronine. Relations between Moldova and Romania, which have been very tense since the post-electoral clashes early this month (EUROPE 9883), must be founded on the “principles of the EU which foresee good neighbourly relations between states”, Topolánek stressed. Voronine said the Moldovan authorities were “concerned” by the position of Romania and considers it “dangerous” that Bucharest wishes to grant Romanian nationality to “millions” of Moldovans. Topolánek also talked to opposition leaders who set out their complaints and documents stating that the parliamentary elections of 5 April were not democratic. Topolánek promised to forward these documents to the EU foreign ministers who will discuss the situation in Moldova on Monday during the External Relations Council (27 April) in Luxembourg. On Thursday 23 April, the EP meeting in plenary session in Strasbourg discussed the situation in Moldova. A delegation of MEPs will meet on the spot from 26 to 29 April to assess the situation.
