Brussels, 26/03/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 26 March 2009, the European Commission adopted a communication on nuclear non-proliferation that sets out potential measures to boost the European Union's contribution to global efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.
The communication highlights measures already taken at EU level to cut the risk of nuclear proliferation, including the Euratom's security control system, the fund for nuclear safety and the nuclear safety cooperation fund; boosts support for the non-proliferation system in light of the 2010 review of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty; and sets out the EU's involvement in the introduction of a global system to ensure the supply of nuclear fuel (with the multilateral framework of the IAEA) to countries wanting to generate nuclear energy.
Over the past two years, the Commission has greatly increased its cooperation with the IAEA, explains a press release noting that in order to be successful, non-proliferation initiatives require coordinated action with key partners like the United States, Russia, Japan and China. The communication can be found on the Commission's website. (O.J. trans fl)
