Brussels, 26/02/2009 (Agence Europe) - Drawing from a report elaborated by Professor Markus Taube for “Think!Desk China research & consulting” and presented to the European Parliament on 25 February by Elisabeth Gardini (EPP-ED, Italy), the European steel association, Eurofer, denounced the systematic dumping practised in the steel sector by China, by way of its nebulous inter-relations between the Chinese state and the private sector, which Eurofer believes is responsible for creating serious distortions on the international steel market. Eurofer Director General, Gordon Moffat insisted that “the report reveals in astonishing precision how the Chinese government organisations are severely interfering in the global market system by distorting the cost/price competitiveness of Chinese steel enterprises to the disadvantage of foreign steel makers. We are asking the European Commission and the member states to strongly react to this by a strict enforcement of EU trade laws based on the results of this important report”. (Ed: trade defence instruments, anti-dumping measures, anti-subsidies and safeguards.) Any further dialogue with China must have the objective of securing a level playing field for European steel makers.” (E.H./transl.rh)
