23/02/2009 (Agence Europe) - The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN) has said it is particularly concerned by the worsened situation of migrants and asylum seekers on the Italian island of Lampedusa where incidents took place on Wednesday 18 February (see other article on p.13). In order to see what the situation is like on the spot, EMHRN has decided to send a mission to the island from 25-27 February, a press release states. Before this, EMHRN calls on the Italian government to give up its current migration policy which makes it an obligation to keep illegal migrants on the island and to no longer apply arrangements with neighbouring Tunisia, as this results in exacerbating tension in centres where migrants are detained.
