SNIPPETS / @@@ the long-awaited words

Felipe Gonzalez, who as readers know, has played a great role in European affairs and is currently chairing the group of wise men on the future of the European Union, has come out with the words I have been waiting to hear from the mouth of a leading figure for a long time, namely: countries that are not prepared to be involved in stronger European integration “can leave the EU”. He pointed out that there is an exit clause in the Lisbon Treaty. There are two positive aspects to this idea. Firstly, it does not contain any criticisms or judgement of anyone who doesn't want European integration to be extended. I will not countenance the use of hurtful or insulting words about Eurosceptics - they are entitled to their opinion. The Norwegians were perfectly entitled to decide not to join the EU and their decision did not make them any less respectable. The decision by the British, Danes and Swedes not to join the euro does not in any way damage the esteem and often admiration that they merit from others. But they cannot stand in the way of other nations having a different view on the future of Europe, and wanting to put it into practice. Particularly because there are various levels of involvement in the European project. Norway is not part of the EU but this does not stop it from working closely and effectively with the EU. Britain, Denmark and Sweden decided not to join the euro and therefore cannot intervene in the deliberations of the Eurogroup or the European Central Bank's decisions. If they are happy with their choice, good for them. The issue being discussed at present is the Lisbon Treaty, which is not compulsory for anyone. But those who don't like the treaty must not stand in the way of those who feel that it is necessary. What is more, they would not be able to. Their rejection would complicate and delay the process, but will not block it. This is the second positive thing about the idea expressed by Felipe Gonzalez. (F.R./transl.fl)
