EP backs Rome in Cesare Battisti affair

Brussels, 06/02/2009 (Agence Europe) - Italy is not alone to face Brazil in the Cesare Battisti affair. On Thursday 5 February, the European Parliament adopted a joint resolution on the refusal by Brazilian authorities to extradite Cesare Battisti. The far left Italian activist Battisti was condemned in absentia by the Italian justice in four homicide cases. He first of all fled to France and then to Brazil where he was arrested in March 2007. In early January, Brazil declared Cesare Battisti a political refugee, thus rejecting the request for extradition from the Italian authorities. Commenting that the final decision of the Brazilian authorities should be fixed in coming weeks, MEPs state they are convinced that review of the decision concerning Battisti's extradition will take into account the judgement given by an EU member state. They trust that Brazil will reach a decision based on principles that it shares with the EU such as rule of law and fundamental rights, including the right to defence and the right to a free and fair trail.
