Troika to examine EU-Afghan relations

Brussels, 27/01/2009 (Agence Europe) - A ministerial troika between the EU and Afghanistan takes place on Wednesday 28 January in Prague. Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg, Commissioner for External Relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner, and EU Special Representative to Afghanistan Ettore Francesco Sequi will participate in the meeting. The Afghan delegation will be led by the country's foreign minister, Rangin Dadfar Spanta. Implementation of the “Afghanistan Compact”, national development strategy, preparation of the next presidential and parliamentary elections, as well as the EU's contribution to the rule of law and fostering of regional ties (particularly between Afghanistan and Pakistan) are on the agenda. The EU has defined three work areas covered by the 2008-10 €500 million aid package: legal reform, rural development and health. (A.B./transl.rh)
