Brussels, 16/10/2008 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has ended the infringement proceedings against Poland for failure to respect EU rules on the emergency telephone number 112. The proceedings were launched in 2006 because information about caller location was not available for calls to 112 from mobile phones. The Polish government explained to the Commission that this information has been provided since 30 June 2008 and the Commission therefore decided to suspend its decision to take Poland to the European Court of Justice. EU Information Society and Media Commissioner Viviane Reding said that Europeans had to be able to count on the fact that emergency services can find them if they dial 112 without knowing exactly where they are or how to explain where they are. EU legislation requires member states to ensure that 112 can be dialled free-of-charge in all member states from all types of telephone (landline and mobile). Member states also have to ensure that calls to 112 are answered and dealt with promptly, and that operators inform the emergency services of where the call was made. Slovakia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Italy, Bulgaria and Romania have not yet complied with the legislation. (I.L./trans.fl)
