Brussels, 11/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption by 46 to 2 and no abstentions of the own-initiative report by Gabriele Zimmer (GUE/NGL, Germany) on promoting social inclusion and combating poverty in the EU, especially childhood poverty, the EP committee on employment and social affairs suggests that a comprehensive approach should be set in place to ensure sufficient income, quality jobs and better access to social services and services of general interest. In particular, MEPs hope to reduce the poverty suffered by children by 50% by 2010 and invite member states to allocate sufficient resources to attaining this goal. They also call on the Council to agree to EU level commitment to put an end to the homeless problems by 2015. They invite member states to set up integrated policies to ensure decent housing for all and emergency winter shelter planning. (G.B./transl.jl)
