25/08/2008 (Agence Europe) - In a declaration published on 21 August, the French Council Presidency welcomes, on behalf of the EU, the transfer of authority in the western zone of the Bakassi peninsula from Nigeria to Cameroon, marking the end of the handover process begun in 2006. The EU “is pleased by the courageous decision by Nigeria and Cameroon to resolve this territorial dispute peacefully by complying with the judgment of the International Court of Justice of 10 October 2002 and the provisions of the Greentree Agreement of 12 June 2006”, the declaration reads. The Presidency pays tribute to the United Nations Secretary General and to his representative for West Africa for their commitment to implementing the Greentree Agreement. (A.N./transl.jl)
