13/05/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 8 May, with the adoption of the report by Ioannis Gklavakis (EPP-ED, Greek) by 395 votes to 161 and 64 abstentions, the European Parliament made corrections to the initial proposal on aid in favour of cotton producers. Minor changes were made to the initial report voted in EP agriculture committee (EUROPE 9645). During the plenary debate, Mariann Fischer-Boel, Agriculture Commissioner, said she was in favour of the MEPs' amendments on reduction of basic surface areas and on the parallel rise in coupled aid according to the number of hectares, as well as on those relating to the creation of national funding envelopes to support restructuring of the sector and improve the quality of production.
