19/03/2008 (Agence Europe) - The draft law for the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty by Poland, as proposed by the government of Donald Tusk and contested by the Conservative opposition at the Diete and by president Lech Kaczynski (EUROPE 9624 and 9625), was sent back to the parliamentary committee on 18 March and will not be voted on in the immediate future. In the meantime, President Kaczynski has submitted his own draft ratification law, which will be examined according to normal procedures. On Tuesday 18 March, Prime Minister Tusk repeated the fact that if the Kaczynski brothers continued to block parliamentary ratification, the government may decide to organise a referendum to approve the new EU treaty, which according to the most recent polls is backed by 75% of Poles.
