Brussels, 10/03/2008 (Agence Europe) - As part of the European Yea of Intercultural Dialogue, the European Commission held a debate in Brussels on 5 March 2008, organised along with the European Policy Centre (EPC), on the impact of immigration on intercultural dialogue, addressed by the vice-president of the European Commission, Franco Frattini, and German MEP of Turkish origin Cem Özdemir. This was the first 'thematic debate' in a series of talks to contribute to the EU's future strategy on intercultural dialogue (beyond 2008). Future debates, all of which are to be held in Belgium, will discuss issues like the role of intercultural dialogue in art and culture discussions among different religions, multilingualism, intercultural dialogue in the workplace, intercultural dialogue in education and intercultural dialogue in the media. The talks will be chaired by an English-speaking journalist, Shada Islam, who writes on the EU's foreign and development policies, immigration issues and tackling discrimination in newspapers and magazines in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The debates are held on the first Wednesday of the month in the Polak Room of Résidence Palace, 155, rue de la Loi in the centre of Brussels and are followed by a reception to allow the discussions to continue in an informal setting.
