European Commission and World Energy Council discuss sustainable energy

Brussels, 07/02/2008 (Agence Europe) - Representatives of the World Energy Council (WEC) and DG Energy at the European Commission took part in a seminar, on Wednesday 6 February, on the challenges of a sustainable energy system. As part of research into ways of ensuring sustainable energy, the experts discussed issues ranging from the vulnerability of Europe's energy supply to new technology. The first part of the seminar discussed the WEC recommendations for political decision-makers from its recent report on Europe's vulnerability to energy crises, assessing the extent to which the EU is equipped to take on the sustainable energy challenges of the future. The WEC says the EU should promote energy efficiency and renewable energy, ensure diversification of the sources of energy used, bring nuclear power back to forums of political and public debate, adopt coherent, joined-up R&D policies for the development of clean energy technology and boost cooperation at EU level. (See report on http://www.worldenergy.org ) The second part of the seminar discussed the EU's strategy for energy technology, unveiled by the European Commission in November 2007 (the SET Plan, see EUROPE 9549).
