GENERAL NEWS / (eu) eu/euro

14/01/2008 (Agence Europe) - The Brussels-based think tank Bruegel has just published a report on economic performance in the euro area since the introduction of the single currency in 1999. The authors, who include André Sapir, Marek Belka and Jean Pisani-Ferry, take stock of the euro until the present and note some of the challenges which will face the euro area in the future. They also set out a series of recommendations in six policy areas of major importance to the future of the EMU: monetary policy, fiscal policy, structural reforms, financial stability, enlargement of the euro area and external representation. The report, “Coming of age”, identifies areas where improvement will have to be made in the working of the euro zone and highlights the role that should be played by the Eurogroup. It is available at: http://www.bruegel.org (A.B.)
