Brussels, 11/01/2008 (Agence Europe) - German Länder (federal regions) are preparing to demand the right to oversee the EU enlargement process. At the next meeting of foreign ministers of the 16 German Länder on 8 February, Bavaria will suggest that the Bundesrat (of the representatives of the Länder) should in the future have the power to give the go-ahead for all German government decisions about access negotiations, including the launch and closure of 'chapter' negotiations with candidate countries, announced Bavarian European Minister Markus Söder in Brussels on 10 January. If the majority of Länder oppose the opening of talks on a particular chapter, this view should be reflected in the German government's position, said Söder. (H.B.)
