30/11/2007 (Agence Europe) - The high representative of the EU for the CFSP, Javier Solana, was due to meet the Iranian negotiator Saïd Jalili in London on Friday afternoon. According to declarations from Teheran, Mr Jalili hoped to present “new initiatives” regarding the Iranian nuclear programme. For his part, Mr Solana stated prior to the meeting that he had no new proposals to put on the table. In the (highly likely) event that the London meeting would bear no fruit, the representatives of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany, which are due to meet in Paris this Saturday 1 December, will focus on new sanctions against Teheran to be put to the vote of the Security Council. On Thursday 29 November, the Iranian foreign affairs minister, Manouchehr Mottaki, reiterated that nothing would deter his country from its objective of acquiring nuclear technology “for peaceful purposes”.
