21/11/2007 (Agence Europe) - On 15 November, the European Commission adopted a proposal allowing for a postponement to the date originally planned (1st January 2008), requiring farmers to implement the electronic identification (EID) systems for ovine and caprine species. Before setting the date for the compulsory introduction of the EID, the Commission intends to organise a debate with the sector (which is very critical of the economic impact that the 2004 regulation is having, - EUROPE 8609). According to EU agricultural organisations, which say that the current system is sufficient (ear markings, tattooing), the cost of EID could account for up to a third of the value of a sheep and 15% the value of a lamb.
