14/11/2007 (Agence Europe) - According to a press release by the Socialist group at the European Parliament, French President Nicolas Sarkozy is believed to have reiterated his determination to block accession negotiations with Turkey on chapters which go beyond the objective of Turkish association with the European Union, at a special meeting with the leaders of the political groups of the EP on Tuesday 13 November. “Mr Sarkozy declared that he would hold talks only on issues linked to Turkish association with the EU and would close five chapters related to potential long-term Turkish membership of the EU”, states the press release. The five chapters in question concern economic and monetary union, agriculture/rural development, regional policy/structural funds, the budget and the institutions. (H.B.)
