14/11/2007 (Agence Europe) - Following the political agreement reached in October (EUROPE 9524), the Council on Tuesday 13 November adopted the common position concerning restrictive measures against Uzbekistan. The EU is thus renewing its regime sanction against the country for a period of 12 months, but is making changes to its application. Although the embargo on weapons has been extended for a year with immediate effect, the application of restrictions on visas has been suspended for a period of six months. Between now and then the Council will conduct a further examination of progress made by the Uzbek authorities on a human rights level and decide whether or not to apply the visa ban. (A.B.)
