THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/turkey/euro

26/09/2007 (Agence Europe) - Marco Cappato and Marco Pannella (ALDE) have criticised the Council's decision to remove Turkey from the design decorating the common face of Euro coins. The decision to create a new coin face was made to take into consideration EU enlargement and new members joining the eurozone. In a press release published on 26 September the two Italian MEPs deplored the fact that in order to include Cyprus on the map, the European Commission had proposed a project in which Turkey would explicitly be included but “the Council deliberately and discreetly removed Turkey from the new common face”. The new design, which includes countries like Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus, is already featured on Slovenian coins. (ab)
