Europalia 2007 showcases the artistic and cultural heritage of the 27 EU member states

Brussels, 19/09/2007 (Agence Europe) - The Europalia Festival, showcasing artistic and cultural heritage from a country in Europe or, more rarely, the whole world, will exceptionally cover all 27 EU member states this year. The organisers point out that movement and dialogue, which established themselves very early on as catalysts of creation in Europe, are key themes running through this festival of exhibitions, concerts, films, theatre, etc. Europalia plans to use all these artistic disciplines to reveal to the public the common threads of what makes European culture special and cohesive, looking at how it developed in the past, how its specificity remains present today, and the extent to which it is likely to be influential in the future. To illustrate the past, there will be an exhibition looking at trends in European art from the fifth to the eighteenth century. Contemporary art will be showcased in a film called 27x27x27 in which 27 major contemporary artists, each from a different country, will comment on the artwork they believe best symbolises the history of European art. This vision of today's Europe will be supplemented by 'Agorafolly,' an artistic tour of the city of Brussels, projecting visitors into the future of European culture with 27 young artists, one from each member state, each displaying in a different square in Brussels a project which illustrates tomorrow's Europe. Finally, each country will present an example of its own specific culture through a classical or contemporary artistic event with a European dimension. The Europalia 2007 Festival runs from 3 October 2007 - 3 February 2008. (il)
