27/08/2007 (Agence Europe) - Early August, US President George W. Bush proclaimed a law establishing a number of recommendations for combating terrorism, especially in transport (EUROPE 9473) and on the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) (EUROPE 9478). At the same time, the US president gave an amended version of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). This law now gives the government the possibility to intercept, without prior judiciary authorisation, telephone and electronic communications from foreign nationals transiting through US territory. It also allows phone calls and electronic communications sent abroad over the past six months to be tapped. It should be noted that a new agreement has also been in place since 1 August 2007 making it an obligation for airline companies to communicate the Passenger Name Records (PNR) of passengers travelling to the United States to the customs and security services (EUROPE 9478).
