Brussels, 23/08/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday the Romanian government announced that it would be organising its first European elections on 25 November. Prime minister Calin Tariceanu declared that, “Following consultation with political parties on Monday, it was decided that the date of the European elections would be 25 November”. He also indicated that his government would take necessary measures for ensuring that the vote took place in optimum conditions. Romania joined the EU on 1 January and has 35 seats out of the 785 seats at the European Parliament. These seats are currently occupied by “provisional” deputies. Many observers will see this election as having a national dimension insofar as it will allow for support for the minority government and strength of the oppositional left to be gauged. In terms of the EU's accession treaty, Bucharest will have to organise European elections before 31 December 2007 (ol).
