24/07/2007 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission's enthusiasm for the DVB-H standard, the use of which it is encouraging to standardise the mobile television market in Europe, is not shared by everyone. Leading the opposition is wireless telecommunications research and development company Qualcomm, which has developed its own standard, MediaFLO, aimed initially at the American market, but which it wishes to roll out in Europe. Qualcomm believes MediaFLO to be much more cost effective, and feels the Commission, in supporting DVB-H, is not abiding by technological neutrality, which requires that no technology should be favoured over another and that it should be up to the market to decide which option is most attractive for consumers.
