09/07/2007 (Agence Europe) - The 5th European Film Festival of Brussels closed on 7 July. The Romanian film “California Dreamin' (endless)” by Cristian Nemescu came out as the festival's big winner, snapping up the Iris Award for Best Film, the Audience Award and the Canvas Award for Best Film. The film “Death of a President (DOAP)” by the UK's Gabriel Range, who created a fictional film about the assassination of President Bush (a film banned in the United States), won the RTBF Award for Best Film and the Be TV Award for Best Film. For five years, the festival has set out to allow the general public to get to know new European talents, but also new talents from four more continents, with its “Cinédécouvertes” category. This gives spectators the chance to see a sneak-preview of some 30 films from all four corners of Europe, some of which have enjoyed support from the MEDIA programme of the European Union. The European programme encourages film festivals, which it sees as “a privileged place for meetings, exchanges and discovery (…), a vibrant and accessible environment for the widest variety of talent, stories and emotions that constitute Europe's cinematography”.
