Kiev calls on EU to end electoral observers

Brussels, 21/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, EU High Representative for the CFSP Javier Solana declared at the end of his meeting with Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko: “I very much hope and am certain that the process that was agreed will continue”. Their meeting took place a few days after a meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Ivanovych at the beginning of the week (EUROPE 9449) mainly focused on the internal situation in the country, which the EU is following very closely in view of the next general elections. The Ukrainian president announced: “Today the full-scale plan on crises regulation implementation has been carried out”. He also indicated that he had requested the foreign affairs minister to invite EU electoral observers over to the election on 30 September. Yushchenko affirmed that he had given “technical instructions to the foreign ministry to send invitations to EU representatives to come to Ukraine and observe the elections on 30 September”. (ab)
