Solana pushes for continued reform in Ukraine

Brussels, 08/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - “We would like to see the Ukrainian government and the Ukrainian political structures to be as stable as possible and as constructive as possible”, said Javier Solana, EU High Representative for CFSP, on Thursday after his meeting with Ukraine's President Viktor Yushchenko. Invited to take part at the pre-summit meeting of heads of state and government of the European People's Party (EPP), Yushchenko also conversed with the president of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pöttering, as well as with Benita Ferrero-Waldner, External Relations Commissioner. Javier Solana expressed confidence in the Ukrainian president's leadership to take forward the economic and political reform process which “will be very important also for bilateral relations with the European Union”. On Monday, the EU and Ukraine initiated talks for an ambitious partnership agreement to cover energy and human rights and provide for the possibility of negotiating a free trade agreement.
