Commission initiates public debate on education and awareness of environmental issues

Brussels, 05/02/2007 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission's delegation in Morocco is this week organising, in partnership with the NGO, Enda Maghreb, and the (Moroccan) Forum on Citizenship, a “national workshop” on the theme: “Education and environmental awareness in Morocco”. The event, to be held on 7 and 8 February in Rabat, aims to give concrete substance to the EU's commitment to promote good ecological behaviour in Mediterranean countries. Participants will be from government circles and the civil society, academic circles and the media, in the aim of conducting a detailed analysis of policies for heightening environmental awareness, and reaching consensus and short and medium-term recommendations, the Commission's delegation in Rabat states. It points out that, in Morocco, given that the main ecosystems are in bad condition and that there is a risk of environmental worsening, it is necessary to carry out large-scale action to allow a collective conscience to emerge. The EU undertakes to fund a large number of environmental projects, including the safeguarding of natural resources and the promotion of clean technologies. (fb)
