Brussels, 30/01/2007 (Agence Europe) - In a written declaration on Tuesday, MEPs Jo Leinen (PES, Germany), Frédérique Ries (ALDE, Belgium), Bernat Joan i Mari (Greens, Spain) and Erik Meijer (GUE/NGL, Netherlands) called on the European institutions to do all in their power to “put an end to prosecution, torture and murder of Baha'is in Iran”. In this context, “Baha'i property is dispossessed, business connections with Baha'i affiliates prohibited, shops and stores closed, private bank accounts frozen, members of the Baha'i community are tortured and murdered and thus the Baha'i existential basis destroyed, they added. The Baha'i religion (or Baha'i faith) comes from Babism. It international centre is in Haifa (Israel). The number of its followers is around 7 million in 193 countries. (eh)
