Brussels, 09/01/2007 (Agence Europe) - The Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development published a report on Tuesday 9 January with a view to dispelling the myths surrounding the trade talks on agriculture. The Commission recommends a balanced approach with reduction of domestic subsidies, export subsidies and customs tariffs. It recalls that the current debate at the WTO on the Doha Round often appears polarised around two competing approaches. Some claim that the potential benefits from trade liberalisation come almost exclusively from tariff cuts, while others argue that the debate should be exclusively about subsidies (an argument used to defend high customs tariffs and, above all, to oppose support policies in developed countries). This latest edition of the MAP (Monitoring Agri-Trade Policy) looks at the gap between rhetoric and reality, and attempts to get to the bottom of some common misunderstandings about the impact of policies on trade. It reviews the trade patterns of a number of key players in the Doha Round and assesses the EU offer. (The report is available at: http: //ec.europa.eu/agriculture/publi/map/03_06.pdf) (lc)
