Martti Ahtisaari intends to meet his timetable for Kosovo

Brussels, 19/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - Following a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and Atlantic alliance ambassadors on 18 October, the UN Special Envoy Martti Ahtisaari, who is leading the talks on the future status of Kosovo, told press he intends to present his plan for the province before the end of the year as planned. “For the moment, I intend to present this plan before the end of the year,” he said. The previous day, however, the Finnish Presidency of the EU and the EU's High Representative for the CFSP Javier Solana had spoken of the possibility of the plan being delayed, in the event of elections in Serbia in December. “I do not intend to take part in speculation on possible elections. We'll see when we get there. … Everyone is talking about them, but I have yet to see a date set,” said Mr Ahtisaari, who also had talks with Javier Solana on 18 October. (dt)
