19/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 17 October, the Council adopted without discussion the decision to issue a commemorative 2-euro coin to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, for which celebrations will be held in the Italian capital on 25 March 2007. The eurozone member states have decided to mint a 2-euro coin with a common design on the national side, whereas the other member states are invited to use this common design on one side of their national currency. The Member States are not supposed to bring out more than one commemorative coin per year but, given the event, they will retain the possibility of doing it this year or in 2007 for another occasion. The Member States have until 30 November 2006 to submit the design for the national side of the coin to the Commission. (ab)
