01/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - During the 'Festa dell'Unita' Agriculture Festival in Pesaro, Italy, on 5 September, the Lega Pesca Italian fisheries organisation will be participating in a debate on marine policy in Italy and the EU, where it will be meeting with Italian environment minister Alfonso Pecoraro. In a press release, Ettore Iani, President of Lega Pesca, stresses the need to take a new look at how marine resources are managed, based on the principle of sustainable development and awareness that marine management requires cooperation with countries outside the EU. Lega Pesca warns that the main cause of instability in the marine ecosystem is pollution from industry, intensive farming and urban discharge. The press release touches on the greenhouse gas effect (as denounced by the Royal Society in London and other groups), explaining that over-warming of the sea has led to new species moving to Mediterranean waters (the 'tropicalisation' of the Mediterranean is leading to species from the Pacific and Indian Oceans being found living in the Mediterranean for the first time).
