Benita Ferrero-Waldner condemns violence and LTTE imposed restrictions

Brussels, 02/08/2006 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday the European Commissioner for external relations, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, condemned the restrictions put in place by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) on access to water in the Trincomalee district of Sri Lanka. This zone is also an important zone for providing water to Sri Lankan troops. The Commissioner said that “I am deeply concerned at the blockage of water supplies to thousands of families and farms”. She also warned that, “there can be no justification for actions such as this which affect the livelihoods of innocent civilians”. Ferrero-Waldner called for the immediate lifting of restrictions and again called for the two sides to get back to the negotiating table and put an end to the violence. She underlined that “I do not think that military force is the best way of resolving problems such as this”. The Commissioner also condemned the recent attacks that had left 18 Sri Lankan soldiers killed, as well as the fighting in the north which had caused many casualties among civilians.
