14/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - In a press release, MEP Marie Anne Isler Béguin, the chairwoman of the EU-South Caucasus parliamentary delegation has called on those attending the G8 Summit to exclude nuclear as a solution to the problem of climate change. The French Green MEP says, “Jacques Chirac has just shed crocodile tears calling on leaders to show greater concern for climate change and to favour alternative energy sources, 'including nuclear'! What double speak, when, one knows that nuclear energy represents between 2 and 3% of the world's end energy. … How is it possible to encourage nuclear energy and pretend to believe there is a real distinction between nuclear for military and for civilian purposes? While France did not hesitate to sell its nuclear technology to Iran, it is calling today for military solutions not to be developed. … How much confidence can one have in Mr Putin when he uses Russian gas and oil as a political instrument to bring former USSR satellite states, like Georgia, back into line?”
