Negotiations fail over adjustment of working hours - Despite sustained effort by Austrian Presidency, EU ministers remain inflexible over opt-out

Luxembourg, 02/06/2006 (Agence Europe) - For the fourth time running, the Social Affairs and Employment Ministers of the EU meeting in Council in Luxembourg on 1 June stalled over the directive regarding certain aspects of adjustment of working hours. The reason for this failure was the famous “opt out” clause providing the possibility of opting out from the maximum 48-hour working week (see EUROPE 9202).
