Brussels, 22/05/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel, President of the Council of Ministers of the EU, and José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, have invited representatives of the main religions to Brussels on 30 May, to attend an exchange of views on the subject "Fundamental Rights and Mutual Respect". The meeting will be attended by high representatives of several Christian churches, of the Muslim and Jewish communities, and by the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Buddhism. "The full exercise of these values [democracy, freedom and respect for human rights] is tempered by respect for other moral standards that are also at the basis of the European society, such as awareness of the feelings of others. As tensions can arise between the exercise of fundamental human rights and awareness of the feelings of others, it is worth reflecting on the role played by the concept of mutual respect in this context", Mr Barroso wrote in his letter of invitation. What role can religious communities play in assuaging the tensions which may arise? What can they expect from the European institutions? These are the questions which will be dealt with during a debate which will also be attended by Commissioners Franco Frattini, Jan Figel and Vladimir Spidla.
