THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/liberia

30/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - The EU High Representative for CFSP, Javier Solana, and Development Commissioner Louis Michel express, in a press release, their satisfaction and relief at the capture and imprisonment of Charles Taylor, Liberia's former president sought for war crimes and crimes against humanity. He was captured in Nigeria on Wednesday and transferred to the Special Court for Sierra Leone. Messrs Solana and Michel both welcome the role played by the new president of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (under whose rule the country has now returned to democracy, Solana noted), and by the UN Peacekeeping Force in Liberia (UNMIL). “This important event sets an outstanding example for Africa and for the rest of the world”, Louis Michel commented. (See EUROPE 9154 on the European Parliament's resolution on the end of impunity in Africa).
